Estevan Mirabal, left, tends to the cement as David Cuellar steadies a gravestone on a new gravesite only feet from the old one for “El Leoncito,” Manuel Antonio Chaves in San Mateo Thursday. Chaves is notable figure in New Mexico and American Civil War history for his part in the Battle of Glorieta Pass among other adventures. Chaves was discharged honorably as a Lt. Colonel and settled later in San Mateo, New Mexico near Grants. After his original property was purchased and gravesite moved, Chaves’ final resting place settled into obscurity until decades ago, two descendants happened upon a weed-covered crucifix topped with a war medal later attrbuted to Chaves in a San Mateo field. A ceremony will be held will full military honors in the town of San Mateo Saturday to commemorate the new headstone.
